If you are going to paint one room yourself, make it a bedroom. We will say that plainly even though we paint them for a living.
What This Room Actually Takes
A standard bedroom is the most forgiving room in the house. Square walls, eight-foot ceiling, one or two windows, one door. A confident first-timer can do one properly in a weekend.
Empty it if you can. A bedroom is small enough that moving everything out is realistic, and painting an empty room is twice as fast.
Do not forget the closet. This is the trap in this room. A walk-in closet can take as long as the bedroom itself: lots of corners, poor light, shelving to cut around, and awkward angles. Decide up front whether it is in scope, and if it is, budget real time for it.
Ceiling first, then walls, then trim. Two coats.
If you are adding an accent wall, pick the wall the bed sits against rather than the one you look at from the doorway. Accent walls work when they frame something, and they look arbitrary when they do not.
Give it a night if you can, with a window open and a fan running. Zero-VOC paint in a well-ventilated room is low risk, but a bedroom is where you spend eight uninterrupted hours breathing, so there is no reason to rush it.
If the room is for a baby, the timing is different and longer. See how to paint a nursery safely. If you are pregnant, read painting while pregnant before you pick up a roller.
We move and protect furniture, do the repairs and priming as a separate step, and include the closet interior in the quote so it is not a surprise line item or a surprise omission.
Most bedrooms are a single day. We schedule so the room is finished and aired before bedtime, and we will tell you honestly if we think it needs longer.
Bedrooms are usually the least expensive rooms in a house. What moves the number: room size, ceiling height, whether closets and trim are included, how much repair the walls need, and whether you are going light over dark. Get a free estimate.
FAQ
You can, with zero-VOC paint, a window open and a fan running. We would rather you gave it a night. It is eight hours of continuous breathing in a freshly painted room, and waiting one night costs nothing.
A day for a crew. A weekend if you are doing it yourself and doing the prep properly. Add half a day if a walk-in closet is included.
If it is open shelving or a walk-in, yes, because the contrast will bother you otherwise. Just know it is not a quick add-on. Closets are slow work in a small space.
Eggshell for most bedrooms. Flat is acceptable in an adult bedroom with smooth walls and low traffic. Use satin in a child's room where walls get cleaned.
When it frames something, yes. Behind a bed or a fireplace it reads as deliberate. On a random wall it reads as a leftover half-tin of paint.
