How to Paint a Nursery Safely
Painting a nursery is not like painting any other room. The person who will sleep in it has no way to tell you the air still smells wrong, and they will spend more hours in that room than anyone else in the house.
The good news is that a nursery is one of the easier rooms to paint well. It is usually small, usually empty, and usually painted months before anyone needs it. That combination gives you the one thing that matters most here: time.

Nobody who is pregnant and no infant is in the house while it is painted or while it airs out. Time and distance do more than any product on the shelf. If you are pregnant and planning to do this yourself, read painting while pregnant first.
No oil or solvent-based products. This is the one people miss. Everyone focuses on the wall paint and forgets that primers, strippers and thinners are where the genuinely high-VOC products live. Water-based only, all the way through.
If the home was built before 1978, do not sand painted surfaces. Lead dust is a real, documented hazard and it dwarfs the paint-fume question. San Antonio has a lot of housing stock from before 1978, so this applies more often here than people expect.
Ventilate during and after, in days rather than hours. Windows open, a box fan in the window facing OUT so it pulls air from the room rather than pushing it around. Keep it running after you finish, not just while you work.
Zero-VOC paint, base and colorants. Genuinely better, and it is what we would use in our own homes. It is fifth on this list for a reason, and saying so is what makes the other four credible.
The Detail Most People Do Not Know
"Zero-VOC" describes the base paint before it is tinted. Adding color can put VOCs back in, and deep saturated colors need the most tint. If you are buying it yourself, ask for zero-VOC colorants as well as a zero-VOC base. When we paint a nursery we handle that part for you.
How to Do It Yourself
Take the crib and mattress out of the room entirely rather than covering them. Fabric holds odor, and a sheet over a mattress does not stop that.
Work in order: ceiling first, then walls, then trim. Cutting in around the ceiling line is the part that takes longest, so give yourself more time than you think for it. If the ceiling is tall or vaulted, read paint my ceiling before you start, because that is the step where most DIY nursery jobs go sideways.
Two coats, and let the first dry properly rather than chasing it. Then leave the room empty with the fan running.
How We Do It
We use low-VOC and zero-VOC products as the default on nursery work. It is what we would want in our own homes and we do not treat it as an upgrade to be sold.
We take everything out of the room, contain the space, and do the ceiling and ladder work so nobody in the household has to. We schedule nursery jobs so the room is finished and aired well ahead of when it is needed, not the week before. Everything is cleaned up the same day and nothing is stored in the room overnight.

Eggshell or satin. Flat hides wall imperfections but does not survive being wiped down, and a nursery gets wiped down. Satin cleans easily without looking glossy. Keep flat for the ceiling.
