Paint My Living Room

If you are pregnant and standing in a room you want painted, you have probably already found a dozen pages telling you not to. Most of them are vague about why, and several are trying to sell you something.

Here is a straighter answer.

What This Room Actually Takes

A standard living room is a full day for one experienced painter, two days if you are doing it yourself for the first time and doing it properly. Most of that time is not rolling walls. It is moving furniture, protecting floors, and cutting in. In a room with a fireplace, built-ins and a lot of trim, cut-in can be more than half the job.

How to Do It Yourself

Move everything to the center and cover it, or move it out entirely if you can. Half-covered furniture is how living rooms end up with roller spatter on a sofa arm.

Fill and sand nail holes before you start, not while you are painting. Prime any patches, because unprimed filler flashes through the topcoat and you will see it in raking light for years.

Cut in the full perimeter first, then roll while the cut-in is still wet so the two blend. Do one wall at a time rather than cutting in the whole room and coming back to it. If your ceiling needs doing, do it before the walls and see paint my ceiling.

Two coats. In a big room with a lot of natural light, one coat over a different color will look fine at night and wrong at 10am.

Where People Go Wrong in This Room

Stopping the color at an inside corner in an open floor plan. If the living room flows into a dining area or kitchen with no door and no clean break, the color has to stop somewhere deliberate: an outside corner, a change of plane, a ceiling break. Stopping at an inside corner reads as a mistake, not a choice.

Underestimating light. A color chosen from a chip under warm evening light can look completely different in a room with big west-facing windows. Paint a large sample directly on the wall and look at it at three different times of day before committing.

Skimping on cut-in time. It is the difference between a room that looks painted and a room that looks professionally painted.

How We Do It

We move and protect the furniture rather than working around it. We do the repairs and priming as a separate step before any color goes on, so patches do not telegraph through.

On open-plan homes we walk the space with you first and agree exactly where the color stops, before anyone opens a can. That single conversation prevents the most common regret in this room.

We cut in by hand rather than taping walls. Tape is slower and, on textured San Antonio walls, it bleeds. A steady hand and the right brush gives a cleaner line.

What It Costs

Living rooms vary more than any other room, because they vary most in size and ceiling height. What moves the number: square footage, ceiling height and whether it is vaulted, the amount of trim and built-in work, how much repair the walls need, and whether the ceiling is included. FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to paint a living room?

A day for a professional crew on a standard room, longer for vaulted ceilings, heavy repair or a color change that needs three coats. Doing it yourself, plan for a full weekend and do not rush the prep.

Do I need to move all the furniture out?

Not out of the house, but out of the way. We move it to the center and cover it, or move it to another room if the job is large. Nothing has to leave your home.

Where do I stop the color in an open floor plan?

At a natural break: an outside corner, a doorway casing, a change in ceiling plane, or a wall that ends. Never at an inside corner in the middle of a continuous wall run. If there is no clean break, painting the connected spaces the same color is usually the better answer.

Do I need two coats over a dark color?

Usually yes, and sometimes a tinted primer plus two coats. Going light over dark is the hardest color change there is. Anyone promising one coat over a deep red is going to leave you with a patchy wall.

What sheen works best in a living room?

Eggshell for most homes. It cleans up better than flat and does not highlight wall texture the way satin does. Flat is fine if you have very smooth walls and no children or dogs.
