Kitchens are the room where the paint most often fails, and it is almost never the paint's fault. It is grease.
What This Room Actually Takes
The rolling is quick, because a kitchen has less open wall than any other room once you subtract cabinets, appliances and the backsplash. The prep is the job. Expect the cleaning and cutting-in to take longer than the painting.
Degrease first, and take it seriously. Cooking puts a thin film on every surface in the room, heaviest above the range and around the vent hood. Paint does not stick to it. Wash the walls and ceiling with a degreasing cleaner, rinse, and let it dry fully. If you skip this step, everything after it is wasted work, and it may not fail visibly for a year.
Pull switch and outlet covers rather than cutting around them. Take down anything mounted where you can.
Cut carefully around the backsplash, cabinet edges and window casings. Small room, lots of edges, high cut-in ratio.
Use a sheen that survives being wiped. Satin at minimum, and semi-gloss if the kitchen sees heavy use. Flat paint in a kitchen looks lovely for about six weeks.
Ceilings in kitchens are often overlooked and are usually the dirtiest surface in the room. If yours has not been done in years, do it while the room is already disrupted. Paint my ceiling covers that.
The Cabinet Question, Answered Honestly
Painting kitchen cabinets is a different job from painting a kitchen. It needs degreasing, deglossing, hardware removal, a different product, and far more drying time between coats. It also costs considerably more, and it is worth it when it is done properly and disappointing when it is not.
We do paint cabinets. If you want walls and cabinets done together, say so when you request the estimate so we can scope both properly rather than squeezing cabinets into a wall job. See interior painting for the full range.
We degrease as a separate, billed step rather than a quick wipe, because it is the step that determines whether the finish lasts. We mask appliances and the backsplash rather than working around them freehand.
We schedule kitchens with the household in mind, because it is the one room people cannot easily do without. In most cases the kitchen is usable again the same evening.
Wall-and-ceiling kitchen work is usually one of the more affordable rooms because of the reduced wall area. Cabinets are priced separately and depend on door count, material and finish. What moves the number: how much degreasing and repair is needed, ceiling height, and whether cabinets are included. Get a free estimate.
FAQ
Yes, and it is the single most important step in the room. Cooking leaves an invisible film that paint will not bond to. Skipping it is the most common reason kitchen paint peels, and the failure often shows up months later.
Satin as a minimum, semi-gloss for heavy-use kitchens or around the range. Both can be wiped repeatedly without burnishing. Avoid flat entirely.
Yes. It is a separate scope with different products, more prep and more drying time, so it is priced separately from wall painting. Mention it when you book the estimate and we will scope both together.
For walls and ceilings, usually a single day, and you can typically use the room that evening. Cabinets take longer because of drying time between coats, and we will give you a realistic schedule up front.
Yes. We mask it and cut to the edge by hand. On textured or uneven tile edges a hand-cut line is cleaner than tape, which tends to bleed.
